Her mother was born in Germany and immigrated in Germany to the United States as a young woman in the year 1958. Cancer of the breast was diagnosed in 1989. She died a decade later after fighting cancer. Handler is a reform Jew, and her father was Jewish. Handler enjoyed a pleasant and healthy life being raised in a wealthy area. At the age of 19 and made the move to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. To help support herself, Handler began to work as an actor. However, when she was aged 21, Handler decided to pursue stand-up comedy as a full-time profession because she realized her story telling abilities. The beginning of her career Handler started out her career as a member of the Oxygen network, which was an all-female cast on a hidden camera/practical joke reality television series Girls Behaving Poorly.
